Family Connects Accreditation

About Family Connects

Family Connects launched in spring 2022 to serve new mothers and babies living in the city of Spartanburg. The program, which operates under Spartanburg Regional Hospital System, provides a home visit from a registered nurse within 6 weeks of giving birth. Nurses are trained to assess newborns and mothers during the visit in addition to making referrals if needed and discussing next steps to address any concerns.

Program nurse Anjonique Fernanders believes that every new mom can benefit from this program.

Offering new moms an opportunity to learn more about postpartum health, child safety and early development allows them to be more conscious of what to look for when caring for themselves and their babies. Making sure these moms have every resource possible ultimately helps contribute to a more positive mothering experience.

Family Connects Reaches Accreditation

Family Connects recently celebrated a huge milestone by successfully reaching accreditation in just 14 months, an accomplishment that Hope Garcia, Director of Women and Children’s Services at Spartanburg Regional Hospital System, says was a result of a continuous improvement outlook paired with strong execution from a passionate team.

We are always looking at the data and listening to feedback to determine what steps we can take to make this experience better for new mothers. Our team of experienced nurses are passionate about their work and realize the importance of providing support in their exciting but challenging time in life.

While connections with community partners and medical assessments are an immediate benefit of this program, the long-term effects are much greater. According to Family Connects International, families who participate in this program are less likely to demonstrate child abuse or neglect and mothers are less likely to experience possible postpartum depression or anxiety.
