Antiwan Tate Recognized with the 2024 Dr. George Newby Jr. Health Equity Leadership Award
The Mary Black Foundation is excited to honor Anitwan Tate with the 2024 Dr. George Newby Jr. Health Equity Leadership Award. Antiwan Tate is the Founding Mentor and Executive Director of My Brother’s Keeper Alliance of South Carolina – Spartanburg.
Antiwan Tate’s work through My Brother’s Keeper uses the guiding principle of belonging to address the social-emotional health and wellbeing of young men of color in our community. The initiative’s evidence-based approach and curriculum reaches youth at a young age and walks alongside them through young adulthood.
Being the recipient of the Dr. George Newby Jr. Award is a humbling honor based on the significance and positive impact made by Dr. Newby in the Spartanburg community. This award is accepted based on the dedication, trust, hard work, and commitment from all our mentees, facilitators, volunteers, and most importantly the YOUNG PEOPLE. Well done, is better than well said.

About My Brother's Keeper
My Brother’s Keeper – Spartanburg (MBK-Spartanburg) is a recognized community affiliate of the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative as well as the YMCA of the USA national Young Men of Color Initiative. Both national initiatives utilize a cradle-to-career framework centered around key milestones, strategies, data, and best practices designed to improve outcomes for boys and young men of color. MBK-Spartanburg uses a Positive Youth Development model through offering school and community based programming centered around mentorship, leadership, entrepreneurship, civic engagement, community service, career exploration, and mental health. Since 2016, MBK-Spartanburg has served thousands of youth and currently serve students in all Spartanburg county school districts, including multiple charter schools and homeschool students.
About the Award
Dr. George Newby, Jr. was the former CEO of ReGenesis Health Care and community health professor at USC Upstate. The Foundation developed an award to honor Dr. Newby’s lifelong work to ensure accessible and equitable healthcare for all people in Spartanburg County. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual or organization working to continue Dr. Newby’s work in health equity by ensuring that all people in Spartanburg County have access to opportunities for health and wellness regardless of who they are or where they live.
The award includes an unrestricted $25,000 grant.

2023: Mount Moriah Baptist Church
Mount Moriah Baptist Church has worked for over 40 years to reduce health inequities and disparities in Spartanburg’s Southside community. Their long list of impactful programs and resources includes the Mount Moriah Diabetes Support Group, the Exercise Ministry, mental health counseling, health and dental screenings, and weekly food distribution.
2022: Nora Curiel
Nora Curiel of PASOs Spartanburg was named the inaugural Dr. George Newby Jr. Health Equity Leadership Award recipient.
Nora Curiel’s work with PASOs supports the Latino community in Spartanburg with education, advocacy, and leadership development.
