Nurturing Early Literacy

Quality Counts is an early-care initiative that creates high-quality learning environments and promotes best practices for teachers that help prepare our youngest students for success in school and life. All Quality Counts centers promote early literacy by:

  • reading daily to students,

  • facilitating creative learning activities to accompany books that bring the stories to life, and

  • sending students home with a copy of the books they read in class to add to their personal library.

The Numbers

During the 2023 Spring & Summer Quality Counts Literacy Program…

13,784 books were distributed

2,262 children received books

189 classrooms benefited

256,265 reading minutes recorded

The Facts

According to Reach Out and Read, reading to young children leads to:

  • better recognition of sounds and letters,
  • knowledge of a wider range of vocabulary,
  • increased listening skills, and
  • a deeper understanding of how stories work.

All of these things can lead to increased kindergarten and school readiness, help caregivers, parents, and teachers bond with their children or students, and teach social-emotional skills like patience and empathy.
