Advice from Natalia
What are the top 3 pieces of advice you would give to nonprofit leaders?
1
Be open
Openness reflects a couple of leadership traits that are valuable, including flexibility, humility, and teamwork. Our environments have shifted and continue to shift, post-pandemic. To lead work successfully in these environments, we need to be open to change, willing to listen to different perspectives and receive feedback.
2
Develop and maintain proximity
Proximity helps all of us better understand the realities of individuals and communities whom our nonprofit sector is trying to better serve. It can help ground our work in relationships and empathy, all of which can inform us to better address the root issues that are creating these realities. Particularly, it can help us see the need and opportunities to create public policy work through advocacy, which I think is critically important to help us meet our sector’s missions.
3
Take care of yourself and your team
The nonprofit sector is doing such important work, and it can be very heavy, particularly when you remain grounded in the realities of the communities you seek to serve. Just as you seek to improve our community’s wellbeing (whether it be housing or education or healthcare), it is important to prioritize your own wellbeing (for yourself and your team). It might require some flexibility to think about how you can manage this, particularly if you are a small organization and might not feel like you can take time off, but we are all much more effective when we are well. We can also think more strategically when we have a moment to step back and reflect. Our wellbeing is connected to our effectiveness.
