Last week, a community collaborative announced plans to build a new school for families with young children.  The Franklin School will put leading research and expertise on early education into practice, serving infants, toddlers, and preschoolers from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.  Between 160-200 students ages 6 weeks to five years old will receive comprehensive early childhood education at The Franklin School.

Spartanburg County First Steps will operate the full-year, full-day program providing nurturing and well-qualified teachers who will facilitate children’s natural curiosity and desire for discovery, preparing young minds for success in school and in life.

Through a partnership with USC Upstate, The Franklin School will provide training and internship opportunities for students in the School of Education’s Child Development and Family Studies Program.

A collaboration with Northside Development Group, First Steps’ Early Head Start program, Piedmont Community Action’s Head Start program, and School District 7’s 4K program, will provide financial support to allow children whose families can’t afford to pay the full price of tuition to attend The Franklin School.

The architect for the project, Oklahoma-based RDG Design and Planning, specializes in designing buildings for children’s optimal development.  The child-friendly architecture uses natural light, lush outdoor learning environments, and warm materials and colors to enrich learning opportunities.  75% of construction costs have been raised and the group anticipates filling the gap with New Market Tax Credits.  Construction will begin once those credits have been secured, with the school opening to children and families about 1 year after construction begins.
